The Stuttgart region is the economic and political center of Baden-Württemberg with world-famous companies such as Daimler, Bosch and Porsche, and a huge Mittelstand presence. This prosperity has allowed many firms to remain independent, incl. some highly specialized outfits, and as such Stuttgart has long been seen as a closed shop. This is beginning to change, but with the dominance of Gleiss Lutz and CMS Hasche Sigle, it is difficult for outside firms to gain a foothold.

Significant developments:

  • Strong business growth is highlighting the age-old difficulties in finding young talent: new graduates do not generally look to Stuttgart to start their careers and this is partly why Stuttgart has not seen the wave of new office openings that other cities have.
  • Gowling WLG and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan are the first international firms to open in the city, indicating that its reputation as a difficult market for outsiders may be weakening.
