Greenberg Traurig

Comment: For this US firm, Dr. Christian Schede’s team meant a hard-hitting and strong presence in Germany: two years after its move from Olswang, it is clear that the team has seamlessly maintained its former practice. And moreover: being part of the well-oiled international Greenberg network has enabled the German team to build on cross-border work.
The core of the German practice is still advice to the real estate and media sectors. In the former, the firm was seen in big-ticket transactions like the sale of the €420m “Pegasus” portfolio and was very involved in some in-demand project developments. With its interdisciplinary team, which also includes a solid finance practice, GT is predestined for such instructions. The renowned TMT team meanwhile advised long-time client Media Broadcast on the development of the new DVB-T2 platform and stepped up activity in the fintech sector (e.g. for Solarisbank). The restructuring practice, which deepened its ties to the real estate and finance lawyers, advised international clients in German insolvency scenarios.
GT often generates new advisory products on the interfaces with its solid practices. IT and energy advice to the housing sector is a prime example. With this, the team has carved out a reputation among competitors and clients as a highly innovative firm geared towards the needs of its clients.

International network: The US firm has numerous offices in the US, and in Europe it has offices in London, Amsterdam and Warsaw. There are also teams in Seoul, Shanghai, Tokyo and Israel.
Developments: Dr. Peter Schorling’s corporate/M&A practice is reducing its reliance on the strong real estate and media practices, which is a key step in the firm being able to widen its position and grow. Advice to Rentokil Initial on a complex joint venture with Haniel Group was a highlight. The growth primarily pushed among young lawyers is bearing its first fruit in other fields like private equity and finance with partner and counsel appointments, but is hindering faster development. Lateral reinforcements are probably needed to quickly lift these practices to new heights and tap the potential lying in the international network and GT’s good reputation. GT also enjoys a good name in the US for litigation. The firm appointed a counsel here too, but more manpower is needed if the team is to capitalize more on the strength of the brand.
