BAKER & MCKENZIE

Comment: A highly recommended employment practice which had to cope with the loss of one of its best-known partners, Dr. Burkard Göpfert (to Kliemt), who boasts outstanding connections in German corporates. But partners such as Scheuer and Trappehl are increasingly making inroads at major companies. The almost legendary cooperation with the ?corporate lawyers, not only within Germany but also internationally, is a firm feature. As a result, a sizeable portion of clients are advised across the firm as a whole, with high-end work being thus funneled into the practice, e.g. the launch of a global matrix structure at Samsung. “The network helps us a great deal in international, but also local matters” was praise from one client for the whole practice.
Strengths: Complex (international) restructuring, company pensions, international employment.
Development potential: The loss of Göpfert was a blow to B&M’s visibility with German corporates. But his former firm Gleiss has already shown how such a loss can be used to foster young partners at the office. B&M has it even easier, as the team can draw on an established Munich team that offers further growth opportunities.
Recommended: Dr. Christian Reichel, Dr. Bernhard Trappehl, Dr. Steffen Scheuer (“trustworthy, first-rate jurist”, client), Dr. Alexander Wolff.
Practice: Project-related advice on employment law to companies, cross-border restructuring, post-merger integration, company pensions (esp. in an international context), ?compliance, transactional advice. (7 equity partners, 2 salary partners, 1 counsel, 14 associates)
Clients: ?? Adient on closing 5 production sites; Etihad on corporate reorganization of Air Berlin; Baxter on reorganization; Mirion on Hamburg site closure; Samsung on introducing global matrix structure.
