MAYER BROWN

Comment: Having grown last year with new hires and an equity partner appointment, this recommended employment team experienced a setback. An employment lawyer in Düsseldorf moved to knowledge management, which leaves the office wanting as far as employment law is concerned. Even more significant was the departure of Dr. Nicolas Rößler to client Albemarle. His appointment as partner in 2016 was widely seen in the market as a broadening of the practice. His departure means the team also loses expertise in company pensions, which, given the low interest rates and strengthening of company pensions laws, currently offers great potential. Nevertheless, MB strengthened connections with existing clients such as Federal Mogul, as well as generating a sizeable amount of new work via the invigorated transaction practice, e.g. for Generac Power Systems.
Strengths: Global setup, strong in Asia.
Development potential: Up to now the partners have been known for their specialties in data protection and company pensions advice. The fact that the team is now focusing on synergies with other practices, such as corporate, could provide an opportunity for greater breadth and give younger lawyers the chance to develop their business.
Recommended: Dr. Guido Zeppenfeld.
Practice: Numerous sector specialties, incl. auto, chemicals, aviation, finance (incl. regarding pay). Focus on German subsidiaries of international corporates, incl. harmonization of working conditions. Much restructuring and outsourcing work, transactional advice ( ?M&A). Litigation, compliance and data protection. (1 equity partner, 1 counsel, 5 associates)
Clients: ?? Generac Power Systems on acquisition of Motortech Holding; Drew Marine on company closure and merger; Avedon on sale of Tesch Inkasso; ongoing: Federal Mogul.
