ALLEN & OVERY

Comment: The pull of the two partners Ubber and Löw in this leading employment practice is unbroken. Clients, esp. from the transport sector (DB Cargo, Lufthansa), have for years trusted in Ubber’s expertise when it comes to pay scale matters and strikes. Löw is excellently connected in the banking sector and was kept busy by pay and restructuring issues. Neufeld raised his visibility in company pensions and data protection advice and is also head of the global employment practice. But competitors like Baker or Freshfields focused on lucrative cross-border work earlier on and more consistently than A&O, while many A&O partners in Germany are still largely associated with national issues.
Strengths: Law on industrial action; specialization in the banking and pharma sectors; company pensions.
Development potential: A&O has seen some upheaval of late, but the employment team remained relatively unaffected. With the increasing restructuring of the German presence, however, the employment team faces the question of its role within the overall firm. Competitors such as Linklaters are turning their attention to international integration. If A&O draws on its network more consistently, it could close the gap on competitors and give younger partners the chance to make an impact.
Recommended: Thomas Ubber (“positive cooperation and solution-oriented”, client), Dr. Hans-Peter Löw (“humorous, good, obliging, aboveboard – fits in well with us”, client), Tobias Neufeld, Dr. Bettina Scharff (“quick and reliable solutions”, client).
Practice: All-round advice to notable international companies, often on (cross-border) projects (incl. restructuring, reorganization, pay systems). Regular advice and stand-alone instructions as well as transactional advice ( ?M&A), company pensions on the interface with ?insurance contracts. Increasingly data protection and outsourcing. (4 partners, 1 counsel, 17 associates)
Clients: ?? DB Cargo on reorganization; Commerzbank in conciliation board (change in operations); Deutsche Lufthansa in wage dispute with Vereinigung Cockpit (public knowledge); Fraport on damages claim concerning illegal strike; ongoing advice to Allianz Deutschland.
