CLIFFORD CHANCE

Comment: The respected patent litigation team around Milbradt in Düsseldorf provides advice and litigation with renowned sector expertise to numerous regular clients from the life sciences sector, among them Pfizer and B. Braun Medical, and in doing so brings its traditional links to the preeminent ?pharmaceuticals and healthcare practice into play. But the second pillar in technical patents, also supported by the overall firm’s client connections, has yet to fulfil its potential, possibly because an associate experienced in this field went to Mayer Brown. Stronger growth thus appears necessary. The practice saw much transactional work, e.g. for Schaeffler and Kingspan.
Strengths: Activity for the pharmaceuticals sector.
European strategy: A partner hire in London underlines CC’s ambition of being visible across Europe with a hard-hitting patents practice – also at the UPC. But this practice will remain small in the transaction firm. Further growth in Paris could make sense. CC boasts a market-leading practice in Spain, which is outside the UPC’s scope.
Recommended: Dr. Claudia Milbradt (“good work”, client).
Practice: Full-service firm with a small IP team for trademarks and unfair competition, patent litigation, strategic advice, licenses and transactions. (Core team: 1 partner, 6 associates)
Clients: ?? Litigation for B. Braun Medical, Hyundai, Pfizer, Strix; KWS Saat concerning joint venture and pay system for R&D and employee inventions; transaction advice to: Schaeffler, Kingspan, Chinese M.L.S. Electronics.
